Redwood, Old Growth
Old growth redwood trees, the venerable members of the Sequoia and Sequoiodendron genera, represent a relic of ancient forests that once covered vast stretches of the Earth.
Diving deeper into the majesty of old growth redwood trees:
Appearance: Beyond their towering stature, old growth redwoods often exhibit unique characteristics like hollowed-out trunks due to fires, large burls, and multiple trunks stemming from a single base.
Foliage: The canopies of old growth redwoods are incredibly diverse ecosystems unto themselves. They house fern mats, suspended soils, and a myriad of species that live hundreds of feet above the ground.
Age and Size: By definition, old growth redwoods have been growing for several centuries, with some trees believed to be over 2,000 years old. They can exceed 370 feet in height with diameters spanning up to 30 feet or more.
Habitat: These ancient trees are typically found in pristine sections of the U.S. Pacific Coast's temperate rainforests, where they have remained undisturbed by logging or other significant human activities.
